Team.Triody.Com: Progress Report about Online Training Groups

As I reported a couple of days ago, I decided to launch a real-world experiment by setting up an online social network which I labeled Team.Triody.Com. I reported that the first weeks were quite successful in terms of member and activity growth. Here is the current update.

Team Triody.com

(1) The network has grown to 39 members. Each member has at least contributed once to the community. I would consider 10 members as relatively active on the site. Additional stats will follow later.
(2) So far, the network has received 10,788 page views and 7 groups have been created on the site by 5 different members.
(3) We have established a weekly “offline” event where in average 5 people participate. We also conducted one additional social event which took place “offline”.

To date, most of the members that have joined the network are “offline” acquaintances that live and work around the area I am located at. We are currently trying to expand our members beyond the city of Lausanne. Right now, we have on person from Zurich, Switzerland and 2 people from the US.

Major findings so far
(1) It is absolutely crucial that there are about 2 or 3 core members that keep the information sharing process alive which, in turn, makes the community attractive for new members.
(2) Off line events help to strengthen personal ties which then facilitates online interaction as well as the promotion of the site across other social circles.

2nd Swiss Triathlon University Championships, 7th in the age group and 19th overall

Last weekend I participated in the Solothurn Triathlon in Switzerland. Due to heavy rainfalls, we could not swim in the Aare river. Hence, the organizers of the triathlon turned the event into a duathlon with the following distances: 6k – 40k – 11.5k.

After a relatively cold night and some heavey rainfalls on Sunday morning, the race was started at 1.15pm in the afternoon. After a very fast first kilometer (3:05min) I found my race pace and arrived in the first transition as 28th (23:53min for 6k). The bike course was realtively flat and my legs felt quite good. After 1h and 28sec I transitioned to the 11.5k run. In the beginning I had to go through some slight stomach issues but after about 5k things were going fine again. After 2h10min and 49sec I crossed the finish line.

Overall, I finsihed as 19th. In my age group I had the 7th fastest time and among the athletes participating in the Swiss Triathlon University Championships I finished 2nd. You can find the results here.

Transition 1

I finished as 6h overall in a total time of 1:56:25. Here are my split times:

  • Swim: 22:33min (1:30min/100m)
  • Bike: 56:48min (38.5 km/h)
  • Run: 36:53min (3:41min/1000m)

Preparing for Rothseetriathlon

I am about to leave for Germany where I’ll race the Rothseetriathlon on Sunday (the site is in German). It is an Olympic Distance which is very close to my hometown. Let’s see how my body has digested the IRONMAN two weeks ago. Ideally, I can realize the following times:

  1. 1.5k swim: 22min
  2. 40k bike: 1:03h
  3. 10k run: 37min
  4. total transitions:3min

Which totals to 2:05h. That’s what I have in mind. We’ll see how it goes. The weather is supposed to be nice and sunny.

Race Report Ironman Switzerland 2007

It’s already been a week but let me give a short overview on how my race went along.

Swim: I knew that swimming was going to be tough. Especially the start in Zurich used to be intense, since you have almost 2000 people starting at once from a 50m wide shore. However, this year I managed to get a good spot at the very left end of the beach. My strategy was to jump/run the first 10-15 meters or so. The water was very shallow so that you could run, dive, stand-up, and jump before swimming. It worked out perfectly and I was leading a little group of swimmers for the first 1 or 200 hundred meters. I did not have any “body contact” or any related issues. The start was perfect! I quickly found my rhythm and found it pretty smooth. Since the sun was still very low it was sometimes difficult to navigate but I had enough people in front of me so that everything worked out perfectly. I entered the transition zone after 1h and 2 minutes. That was about the time I had planned. I was happy.

Bike: After a quick 2-minutes change I was sitting on my bike and was very much looking forward to the bike part. That was my favorite part and I planned 1h40min for each of the three loops. There was no wind, the sun was shining and it was nice and warm. I raced the first and the second loop in 1h and 35min // 1h and 38min. The toughest part were the two climbs in the middle of the lap. We had to climb up two time approx. 200m. While the first climb was relatively steep. The second climb was rather long and “mentally” demanding. The third climp in each lap was hearbreak hill. Although that was really steep, I found it much nicer to climb since it was only 70m in altitude difference and lots of people who cheered. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to eat my power bars as planned. I could not chew them so I decided to switch to power gels. Not the most delicious food, but easy to eat. In my third loop I slowed down a little bit since I did not want to blow before starting the marathon. After 4h56min on my bike, I arrived in the second transition zone. It was about 6hrs after the face started.

Run: After 100m of running I felt that it was going to become tough. My legs were extremely tired/soft and I thought I was moving extremely slowly. At the end this first out of four loops was my fastest in 49mins for 10.5k. Although I felt that I was running smoothly and “recovering” the longer I was underway, I started to have some digestion issues in lap 2 and 3 which made my stop by at mobile toilets three times (!). I think I lost about 10 minutes overall with this events. However, after each “visit” I felt great again. From a subjective feeling, the last lap was my best. I was relaxed, my heart rate was doing ok, and finished the last lap in 52 minutes. I crossed the finish line after 3:37h in the marathon and 9hrs39 overall. I finished 13th in my age group and 74th overall. All in all a nice race.

The final marathon

Athlete’s Garden: I was lucky to find the athlete’s garden pretty empty. I took a quick shower and got a very nice 20-min massage.
